“Producing two million vehicles at CAMI is a reflection of the success of our exciting new vehicles, the high quality of the CAMI workforce and our continued investments in engineering and manufacturing in Canada,” said Michael Grimaldi, president, General Motors of Canada. “With a combination of style, functionality and value, the Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent are competing in the sweet spot of one of the hottest segments in our industry today.” The Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent were engineered at General Motors’ Canadian Regional Engineering Centre in Oshawa, ON and then assembled at CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, ON. The addition of the Pontiac Torrent in March 2005 as part of GM’s multifaceted Beacon Project added 700 jobs at the CAMI plant and helped return the facility to strong and high utilization. “Many Canadian workers have had a hand in the design development and production of the Equinox and Torrent,” adds Grimaldi. “These two vehicles are truly made-in-Canada.” The two millionth vehicle is a silver, 2006 fully-optioned, Chevrolet Equinox, which is the first vehicle in the automotive industry to be both engineered and manufactured in Canada. Headquartered in Oshawa Ontario, General Motors of Canada employs more than 20,000 people nationwide. GM of Canada manufactures a variety of vehicles, engines, transmissions and other components, and markets the full range of General Motors vehicles and related services through 765 dealerships and retailers across Canada. Vehicles sold through this network include Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Cadillac. Source: GM Canada |
